MAX BOHM
(American, 1868-1923)
A New England Town Meeting in the Early Days
oil on canvasboard
inscribed verso Painted by Max Bohm 1909
20 x 44 1/2 in., frame: 28 x 52 in.

Other Notes: This work is a scale study for a monumental (approximately 22 x 8.5 feet) work by Bohm in the law library of the Cuyahoga County Courthouse in Cleveland, Ohio (Bohm's hometown). Both versions of the work depict the moment of "casting the vote," as ballots are placed into a hat during a town meeting in colonial New England. In a 1912 article in the periodical The Ohio Architect, Engineer, and Builder, Bohm's work is described, "[it is[ so mature in both conception and treatment, manifesting the authority, freedom, and poise of a man who has found himself. He has something worth saying, and he says it in the most simple, direct, straightforward manner possible…his effects are legitimate, revealing the highest artistic sense and complete mastery of technique."
