- Notes: James Bruce was a Scottish explorer and was known as "The Abyssinian". He studied at Edenburgh University and became famous for his exploration of Africa. Bruce went to Algiers in March of 1763 where he was apponted British consul. He remained at that post until 1765, when his replacement arrived. He then began his famous expedition to discover the source of the Nile.
