  • Notes: In the interest of full disclosure, Clive Loveless dated this piece as c. 1830, but I think it's a generation earlier. I included this whimsical pieces in my Hali article yellow ground Konyas in spite of its brilliant red ground, because I felt that it might be one of [a] group of small pieces that belonged. Its purpose is not obvious - the almost square dimensions and lack of elems argue against it being woven as a pillow cover, so a small mat is likely its "raison d'etre." In the article I wrote that "I would place it in the group for its palette, all over pattern of cruciforms and other odd shapes, naive border, wool and weave characteristics. The cross-like motifs are formed by squares with vertical and horizontal projection and are very similar to the designs on a 15th century brown-ground Fostat fragment published by Carl Johann Lamm ( Carpet Fragments Stockholm 1985, p. 30) and described as a "design of square cartouches in alternate rows." Our weaver had obvious difficulties executing the pattern with precision and she had problems with the border, but these are the kinds of imperfections that brand this piece as unique and add to its charm.
