JAMINI ROY (Indian 1887-1972) THE FLIGHT INTO

  • Notes: Jamini Roy is described as one of the most significant and influential Indian artists of the 20th century. Formally trained at the Calcutta College of Art, Roy began his art career as a traditional portrait and landscape painter in the Western tradition. In the early 1920's, he decided to develop his own personal painting style inspired by traditional Indian folk arts from his native Bengal. The bold sweeping brush strokes of Kaiighat Pat were influential in his first images of the Santhal Dance. Jamini Roy's intent was threefold: to capture the essence of simplicity embodied in the life of the folk people; to make art accessible to a wider section of people; and to give Indian art its own identity.
