JAMES E. BUTTERSWORTH (American, 1817-1895) YACHT RACE IN NEW YORK HARBOR signed J.E. Buttersworth, l.r.; oil on canvas; 14 x 20 inches

  • Provenance: Estate of a Lady, Georgia; Estate of a Lady, South Carolina
  • Notes: According to New York Yacht Club (NYYC) records, the house flag identifies the leading boat as the 52 foot sloop Christine (formerly Daphne). The boat was built in Brooklyn in 1865 and was owned at the time of the race by H.E. Dodge, a newly elected member of the NYYC. The house flag of the trailing boat indicates that it was the 48 foot sloop Iola, built in Mystic Connecticut in 1881 and owned by Oswald Jackson. The background of this painting is New York's upper bay showing Castle Garden and Castle William on Governors Island. The painting spent 20 years in the attic of a South Carolina estate before it was discovered by a family member just minutes before it would have been sent to the landfill.
  • Condition: In 2004 the painting was restored by Colin Post of Asheville NC. It was cleaned and lined. There was a 2" tear, lower left in the foreground in front of the main yacht and minute areas of paint loss in sky and sail - all restored. Current condition is good. Black light shows tiny spots of restoration in sky and one small area in sail. 2" area in foreground (tear). The painting is lined and is in a period carved giltwood frame bearing a D.C. label. The signature is good - not enhanced. (total restoration less than 5%)
