Provenance: The Birnie Philip Collection; A Massachusetts Estate.

Other Notes: Whistler designed the collector's stamp found on the verso of this piece for his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip, who was also the executrix of his estate. The square around the design indicates that the work was stamped during his lifetime; after his lifetime, the design was encompassed by a circle.
