  • Notes: Other Notes: This plate depicts a Philadelphia river landscape traditionally identified as Lemon Hill, the Federal-style mansion overlooking the Schuylkill River, now within Fairmount Park. Built in 1799–1800 for the merchant Henry Pratt, Lemon Hill stood on land formerly belonging to Robert Morris's estate, The Hills, and was celebrated for its elevated position, landscaped grounds, and views over the river. The porcelain scene, with its house, bridge, sailboat, figures, cattle, ducks, and trees, translates this recognizable Philadelphia landscape into the decorative language of Chinese export porcelain. The service has been associated with Richard Bache, Benjamin Franklin's son-in-law through his marriage to Sarah Franklin Bache. Whether ordered by Bache or another Philadelphia patron, the plate clearly belongs to the circle of early nineteenth-century American-market porcelains depicting local landscapes and civic scenery. As such, it reflects Philadelphia's pride in the Schuylkill River landscape at a time when country seats, bridges, pleasure grounds, and river views formed an important part of the city's visual identity.
