(American, 1885-1970) TWO BAILEY'S ICE CREAM PAINTINGS one signed Howard Smith, l.l.; 55 x 38 1/2 inches and other signed Howard E. Smith, c.r.; 56 x 28 1/2 inches; oil on canvas laid down on aluminum; Note: Howard Smith was an illustrator who studied at the BMFA with Tarbell and at the ASL with Bridgman. This pair of paintings were commissioned by Mrs. Bailey, the owner of Boston's first ice cream parlor Bailey's of Boston (est. 1873), to hang in the West Street store. The model was a French dressmaker who frequented the ice cream parlor, as did Mr. Smith. In 1966, the paintings were moved to the Boylston St. parlor and hung there until Bailey's of Boston was sold to Fannie Farmer's and eventually went out of business in 1988. The images were also used in advertising, menus and the packaging of their popular Valentine's candy.
