George Washington (1732-1799) Autograph Letter to General Henry Knox (1750-1806), Mount Vernon, 23 January 1787

the letter reading "My dear sir,
The acct. of robbing the post rider of the mail at Newark on the 4th [__] has filled me with apprehension that a long, and confidential letter which I wrote to you on the 26th [___] was in it. - In the commencement it must have been so - my best hope is that the inattention to, & practice of bringing back, instead of exchanging mails, which frequently happens, and did actually happen about that time, may have saved my letter (for one of a similar nature of that to you was written to Gen. Humphreys of the same date) - I pray you to relieve me from my present suspence as soon as this had get to hand.
We had the pleasure to hear by Major [__] who left this yesterday for Fredericksburgh that you, M. Knox and Family were here as well - accept every good wish we can offer you - and be a friend of the [__] care repaid and friendship of

  • Condition: As is; the letter laid on a second sheet of paper, which is in turn laid on a backing board. Toning throughout; several repaired tears.
