GAZETTE DU BON TON - ARTS MODES ET FRIVOLITES

  • Provenance: From the Estate of D.D. Ryan, New York
  • Notes: Included in this collection of issues are numerous colour pochoir illustrations by Art Deco masters. Noteable are "A La Comedie" by Gose (No. 1, pl. VII), Lapape's "Lassitude" (No. 1, pl. VIII) and Bakst's "Philmele" (No. 6, pl. I) to name but a few. In his 1985 Lyell Lecture entitled, "The Art Deco Book in France", Gordon Ray stated "La Gazette du Bon Ton from its origin was one of the most sought after of fashion publications. It's success, of course, was owing principally to its plates which are not only records of the dress of the time but also of fresh and attractive compositions in themselves. Altogether, the style and format of La Gazette du bon ton presage what the Art Deco book would become when freed from the fashion straight jacket." Although not a complete set, this collection is unique, as the editions are bound in colorfully decorated tooled leather bindings of very good quality.
