  • Provenance: Provenance: By descent within a Massachusetts Family.

In November 1893, Frederic Remington traveled to the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia with the author and journalist Julian Ralph to document the rural landscape and communities for Harper's New Monthly Magazine. Remington's paintings from this trip were celebrated for their quiet restraint and, when considered in contrast with his frenetic depictions of Western life, demonstrate his range as an artist. This work depicts a distinguished circuit rider, an itinerant preacher who traveled between frontier settlements. It was used as illustration for Ralph's article "Where Time Has Slumbered" in an 1894 edition of Harper's New Monthly Magazine. This lot is accompanied by an original edition of the Harper's Monthly volume that includes the aforementioned article and painting.
  • Condition: Mat burn around all edges, extending approx. 1/2 in. from edge on left, right, and lower sides and approx. 3/4 in from top edge.
