Extremely Rare Chinese Export European Market ‘Enterprising Monk' Cup and Saucer

ca. 1760; decorated with gilt rim and centrally depicting a famille rose scene of a monk dressed in a habit with his arms around a woman in a landscape; diameter of saucer: 4 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: The collection of Elinor Gordon; Alderfer Auction, Hatfield, Pennsylvania, 24 April 2024, Lot 6125.
  • Literature: Hervouët, F., and N., and Bruneau, Y., La Porcelaine Des Compagnies Des Indes A Decor Occidental, Flammarion: Paris, 1986, p. 180, fig. 7.112. A similar example is in the collection of The British Museum, no. 1953,1015.4.a.
  • Notes: This extraordinarily rare satirical scene is better known, though still only rarely encountered, on dinner plates. The present cup and saucer appear to be the only known teawares from the service. The subject, traditionally known as The Enterprising Monk, shows a monk embracing a young woman in a landscape and belongs to a broader European satirical tradition aimed at clerical hypocrisy. Such imagery reflects the anti-clerical and anti-Catholic currents that circulated widely in European visual culture from the Reformation through the eighteenth century. On Chinese export porcelain, the subject is especially unusual, combining a European moralizing or comic print source with the famille rose palette for the export market.
