Extremely Rare Chinese Export Danish Market ‘Queen Juliane Marie' Tea Bowl

ca. 1760; depicting two deities supporting two shields, one bearing the monogram M and the other with a portrait of Queen Juliane Marie (Danish, 1729-1796); decorated with en grisaille and polychrome enamel floral sprays; height: 1 3/4 in.

  • Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen Arts & Auctioneers, Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Literature: Hervouët, F., and N., and Bruneau, Y., La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Flammarion: Paris, 1986, p. 332, no. 14.25.
  • Notes: Juliane Marie of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern was Queen of Denmark and Norway from 1752 to 1766 as the second consort of King Frederick V. The service is decorated with a central rococo cartouche supported by Neptune and Venus, one shield enclosing a portrait of the queen and the other her monogram. It was probably ordered soon after Juliane Marie's marriage to Frederick V in 1752, either to commemorate the marriage or as part of the broader celebration of her queenship. The design belongs to a small group of Scandinavian-market Chinese export porcelains that adapted a popular European decorative motif by substituting different portraits, ciphers, and borders for specific royal or aristocratic patrons. Published examples from the Juliane Marie service include pieces in the Helena Woolworth McCann Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as a coffee beaker and saucer illustrated by Phillips in China Trade Porcelain. Howard and Ayers also discuss the related group in China for the West, Vol. II, p. 398, no. 396.
  • Condition: extensive restoration (visible in images).
