Extremely Rare Chinese Export American Market Rose Medallion Plate from the wedding service of Fanny Hazard Bond, Connecticut

ca. 1868; bearing the central monogram FHB; decorated with polychrome medallions depicting courtly scenes alternating with vignettes of birds, flowers, and butterflies against a tightly packed gilt ground with scrolling vines; diameter: 9 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: From a private Essex, Massachusetts collection.
  • Notes: This set is not recorded in any of the works by Dr. John Q. Feller, the leading expert on Canton Famille Rose, Mandarin, and Rose Medallion porcelains. The original assignation to Fanny Hazard Bond comes from a sales catalogue of Skinner Inc. for a sale held on March 6, 2011 and entitled American Furniture & Decorative Arts., Lot 77 is described as follows: "The platter reportedly was once part of a dinner service given as a wedding present to Fanny Hazard Bond, who in 1869 married Ephraim Ward Bond. Fanny is related to Colonel Augustus George Hazard, who was head of the Hazard Powder Company in Hazardville, a section of Enfield, Connecticut."
