Extremely Rare and Exceptional Chinese Export American Market Puce Ship Saucer

ca. 1800-1810; depicting a puce central image of a ship under full sail flying the American flag and decorated with a gilt rim; diameter: 4 3/4 in.

  • Provenance: Eastbourne Auctions, Eastbourne, England, 3 July 2024, Lot 425.
  • Literature: For a similar coffee cup and saucer, see Christie's, New York, The Peter H. B. Frelinghuysen, Jr. Collection of Chinese Export Porcelain, 24 January 2012, Lot 35 ($3,250 price realized).
  • Notes: Beginning probably when Elias Haskett Derby's Grand Turk was painted inside a magnificent punchbowl in 1786, ships of the new nation were portrayed on Chinese export porcelain, but this service – certainly a special order – is apparently unrecorded.
  • Condition: Please note: All property is sold "AS IS" and any statement, whether oral or written, is given as a courtesy and shall not be deemed as a guarantee, warranty, or representation of the authenticity of authorship, physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, provenance, exhibitions, literature or historical relevance of the property or otherwise.
