ca. 1790; bearing the arms of the STATE OF NEW YORK with a simplified coat of arms, flanked by the figures of Liberty and Justice; decorated with cobalt blue ground gilt star border; diameter: 9 7/8 in.

  • Provenance: Private American collection; Dore & Rees, Frome, England, 25 September 2025, Lot 227.
  • Literature: For a discussion of the arms of New York, see Howard, D., Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London: 1974, p. 753, cat. W5. For an extended discussion, see also Howard, D. S., New York and the China Trade, chapter entitled "The First Century of the American China Trade, 1790-1880," specifically pp. 87-94. See also Brawer (1992), p. 80, a coffee cup; Howard & Ayers (1978), p. 514, a similar saucer; Litzenburg (2003), p. 145, a saucer; Beurdeley (1962), cat. 218; Howard (1974), p. 753-5, including a saucer with the fully correct arms; Phillips (1956), pl. 102.
  • Notes: This pair of plates bears a simplified version of the arms of the State of New York, first adopted in 1778 under Governor George Clinton. The design, with the arms flanked by Liberty and Justice, became one of the most popular American civic devices on Chinese export porcelain in the early Federal period. David S. Howard records no fewer than thirty variations of Chinese export porcelain bearing the New York arms, most of which were almost certainly made for residents of the state. In addition to specially ordered services with family initials, Howard notes that a larger number with gilt floral sprays were likely shipped for general sale. The present pair, however, with a broad cobalt-blue border and inner and outer bands of gilt stars, does not appear among the versions illustrated by Howard and represents an especially attractive and apparently unrecorded variant of this important American armorial subject.
