Exceptional Pair of Chinese Export American Market Canton Famille Rose Peacock Plates

ca. 1877; depicting in the central roundel a peacock in full display and decorated with polychrome floral and precious-object border, with an inner border of an all-over fruit-and-floral pattern with butterflies on a gilt ground; diameter: 8 3/8 in.

  • Provenance: Collection of Mr. C. S. Miller, Sr., Virginia; Leland Little Auctions, Hillsborough, North Carolina.
  • Literature: Nadler, D., China To Order: Focusing on the Nineteenth Century and Surveying Polychrome Export Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1908), Vilo International: Paris, 2001, p. 127.
  • Notes: But for the substitution of a peacock for a fish, these plates bear a striking resemblance in quality, palette, and border design to the distinctive Chinese export "Fish" service associated with President Ulysses S. Grant and Mrs. Grant. The Grants visited China in 1879 during their post-presidential world tour, and examples of the fish service are generally described as having been acquired or ordered at that time. The present "Peacock" plates, with their full-display bird set within a similarly elaborate Canton Famille Rose border, may reasonably be dated to the same late nineteenth-century moment. Comparable peacock plates are known with related central decoration but differing border treatments, suggesting that the subject circulated in more than one version. Earlier datings to the second quarter of the nineteenth century should therefore be treated cautiously, as the close stylistic relationship to the Grant-associated fish service supports a later date, circa 1877–79.
