Exceptional Chinese Export English Market Armorial Charger

ca. 1720; bearing the arms of Thomas Pitt of Blandford, with the arms of his wife, Lady Frances Ridgeway, in pretence, the arms flanked by black raptor supporters and above the motto AMITIE; decorated with gilt and iron red floral border spaced by four oval panels each enclosing the baronial coronet over the white stork crest; diameter: 12 1/4 in.

  • Notes: The present example was ordered for Thomas Pitt, eventual Earl of Londonderry, and second son of Thomas Pitt. The senior Thomas Pitt was known to have sold "The Pitt Diamond," the most precious stone in the Crown of France, to the Regent of Orleans. The owner of this service was created Baron of Londonderry in 1719 and advanced to Earl of Londonderry in 1726.
