EUROPEAN SCHOOL, (pre-18th century), MADONNA AND CHILD, oil on panel;, 17 1/2 x 11 3/8 inches

  • Condition: According to the conservation department at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, there visible white film covering the marjority of the panel is a layer of wax and tissue paper. This is a conservation technique typically used to prevent pigments from falling off. This layer can be removed by a conservator. At some point the wax and tissue paper layer was removed from the top left area (over the faces) and presumably the rest of the piece would look like that if the remainder of the layer is removed properly.
