(Russian, b. 1892) WOMAN AND SATYR inscribed Erte, stamped Fine Art Acquisitions, dated c 1985 and numbered H/C 7/9; parcel-gilt bronze purple brown and red patina with 24 Kt. gold leaf; height: 17 inches Note: This bronze was cast in February, 1986 by Meisner/Fine Arts Acquisitions. It was cast in an edition of 350, with 37 artist's proofs and only 9 H.C.'s (publisher proofs), of which this #7. According to Erte, in this piece "An intoxicated bacchante dances to the music of a satyr's flute. Here is a symbol of autumn - the season of dead leaves, grapes, and the new wine. But this image of autumn is not sad, like that of the sculptures The Hunting and Autumn - just the opposite. It is a hymn to the pleasures of life. The inspiration for this image was a cover design I did for Harper's Bazaar in the twenties." (Lee, v.i., p. 72). A certificate of authenticity from Erte will accompany the lot. Literature: Marshall Lee (ed.), Erte Sculpture (New York, E.P. Dutton, 1986); pp. 72-74, illus.
