ENGLISH SCHOOL (19th century) WINSTANLEY'S EDDYSTONE LIGHTHOUSE and RUDYARD'S EDDYSTONE LIGHTHOUSE both signed Ardent, 1880, l.l.; two oils on board in matching frames; 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches

  • Provenance: Property from the Eric H. L. Sexton Trust, Rockport, Maine
  • Notes: Note: Winstanley's Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be erected on the Eddystone Rocks located in Plymouth, England. It was built by Henry Winstanley and first lit in 1698. It survived only five years until it was destroyed by the Great Storm of 1703. Rudyard's Lighthouse was built to replace Winstanley's Lighthouse by John Rudyard and was lit in 1709. This second lighthouse survived for 50 years, until the top lantern caught fire on December 2nd of 1755, thus burning it to the ground. In 1880, the artist would have had to work from artist drawings, as the lighthouses depicted were no longer in existence.
