Tanning," inscribed "Paris" and dated "1939," l.r.; watercolor on paper board; 12 x 9 inches "Note:" In 1935, soon after her arrival in New York, Dorothea Tanning discovered and embraced the surrealistic movement through the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition "Fantastic Art, Dada and Surrealism." She met Max Ernst in 1942 and the two artists were married four years later. See Color Plate II.
