Clementine Hunter is one of the most celebrated folk artists of the twentieth century. Born just two decades after the Civil War, she lived her entire life in rural Louisiana. She began painting in the 1940s, depicting scenes of rural life from memory in her self-taught style. By the 1970s, she had garnered widespread critical acclaim and her works had been exhibited at numerous institutions, including the Museum of American Folk Art in New York.
