Chinese Export Spanish Market 'Cathedral of Seville' Lobed Platter

ca. 1775; depicting the Sacristia Mayor of Seville Cathedral to the right, surrounded by a walled architectural enclosure complete with battlements and towers, with a lady punting a sampan to the left, in front of a blue and orange rock behind which grows large flower sprays with peony and lotus blossoms, the bird flying above a carp fish and two ducks swimming in the river; decorated with cobalt blue enamel scrolling floral border; length 15 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Brettells Auctioneers & Valuers, Newport, England, Antiques, Jewelry, and Collector's Sale, 30 September 2015, Lot 324.
  • Notes: The building represented on this group has been identified by the architect and painter José Ramón Sierra as the Sacristía Mayor of Seville Cathedral. This identification is significant, as Seville Cathedral appears to be the only known Spanish building represented on Chinese export porcelain. The scene combines the European architectural subject with distinctly Chinese landscape elements: a walled enclosure with battlements and towers, a woman punting a sampan, flowering plants, ducks, a fish, and an out-of-scale bird above the water. Related examples are illustrated in Jorge Welsh, A Time and a Place, figs. 26–30.

Earlier discussions of the subject associated the design with the nearby Lonja, or merchants' exchange, later the Archivo General de Indias. The Lonja was commissioned under Philip II, designed by Juan de Herrera, begun in 1584, and completed in 1646; in 1785, under Charles III, it was converted for use as the Archivo General de Indias. The present identification with the Cathedral's Sacristía Mayor, rather than the Lonja, clarifies the likely architectural source while underscoring the rarity of this Spanish subject on Chinese export porcelain.
