CHINESE EXPORT EUROPEAN SUBJECT PLATE WITH FABLES OF LA FONTAINE DECORATION, 18th century
with colorful enamels depicting an amorous couple in a landscape setting; diameter: 9 in.

Literature: A similar plate is illustrated and discussed in Michel Beurdeley, China Trade Porcelain, Charles E. Tuttle Company, Rutland VT. 1962, fig. 41, pg. 62

Other Notes: The decoration on this plate is inspired by an engraving called "The Peasant Boy looking for his lost calf", by Larmessin after a drawing by Vleugels.


  • Condition: Very faint 2 in. hairline crack at rim (only visible on back of plate).
