Chinese Export European Market Biblical Subject 'Book of Ruth' Polychrome Enamel Plate

ca. 1750; depicting a polychrome central scene of three women harvesting in a field, possibly the Biblical subject of Ruth, Naomi, and Orpah; decorated with gilt and iron red scrolling foliate border; diameter: 9 1/8 in.

  • Provenance: Koller Auktionen AG, Zurich, Switzerland, 7 June 2016, Lot 429.
  • Literature: For similar examples, see Hervouët, F. and N., and Bruneau, Y., La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Flammarion: Paris, 1986, p. 87, no. 4.18. See also Howard (1994), p. 93, no. 83.; A similar example was sold at Sotheby's, New York, Chinese Export Porcelain from the Private Collection of Elinor Gordon 23 January 2010, Lot 260 ($5,000 price realized).
  • Notes: A rare Chinese export dinner plate decorated with a European subject of harvest, within a gilt and iron-red rococo shell-and-scroll border. The scene has traditionally been associated with the Book of Ruth, in which Ruth, after remaining loyally with her widowed mother-in-law Naomi and returning with her to Bethlehem, gleans barley and wheat in the fields of Boaz to support them. A dinner plate from the Hodroff collection is illustrated in Howard (1994), where he notes its rarity and that it might be a biblical scene. The design is also found on a later service from about 1800.
