  • Literature: For similar examples, see Howard, D. S., Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. 1,. Faber and Faber: London, 1974, p. 678; and Schiffer, H., P, and N., China for America, Export Porcelain of the 18th and 19th Centuries, Atglen: 1997, p. 45. • Notes: The lady and anchor above the oval cartouche are the traditional emblems of Hope, as a naval heroine. They are sometimes associated with the State seal of Rhode Island and may therefore further the identification of this "Smith" to Henry Smith of Providence, Rhode Island, who was an officer of the ship George Washington on a voyage in 1794. Henry Smith was born in Providence, Rhode Island on 10 February 1766. He became a successful merchant and militia officer before serving in the State Senate. He was the Democratic-Republican Governor of Rhode Island from 15 October 1805 to 7 May 1806.
