Chinese Export American Market Rose Medallion Cup and Saucer from the service of Daniel Ammen, best friend and onetime lifesaver of Ulysses S. Grant, Eighteenth President of the United States

ca. 1868; bearing the central monogram A; decorated with polychrome butterfly and floral motifs with geometric designs against a gilt background and panels depicting courtly alternating figural and flora and fauna scenes; diameter of plate: 5 3/4 in.

  • Notes: Coming from a service which belonged to Daniel Ammen (May 15, 1820 – July 11, 1898) was a U.S. naval officer during the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era, as well as a prolific author. Ammen was appointed commanding officer of a newly commissioned screw steamer USS Piscataqua at Portsmouth Navy Yard and served within the Asiatic Station until February 1869. Over the next year, the Piscataqua visited ports in China, Japan, and the Philippines while protecting American interests in East Asia. When Daniel Ammen wrote to his childhood friend, President Ulysses S. Grant, on November 30, 1868, he mentioned that he had ordered a monogrammed service for himself at the same time he ordered Grant's, also offered in this sale.
