Chinese Export American Market Reticulated Plate from the service of Theodore and Lydia Lyman, Boston, Massachusetts

ca. 1786; bearing monogram TLL in a draped heraldic shield; decorated with polychrome floral motif border; diameter: 7 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Akiba Galleries, Dania Beach, Florida.
  • Notes: Theodore Lyman (1753-1839) moved to Boston and successfully established himself in the shipping business, expanding his business to the Northwest fur trade and on to China, and prospering enough to retire to a grand Federal style country seat house outside Boston called The Vale, which stands to this day and is an Historic New England Property. Examples of this service are in the collections of both the Peabody Essex Museum and Historic New England.
