Chinese Export American Market 'Quaker Farmer' Tea Bowl and Saucer for the Morris Family, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

ca. 1810; depicting in gilt and en grisaille an outdoor scene of a farmer with a cow; diameter of saucer: 5 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Freeman's | Hindman, Cincinnati, Ohio.
  • Literature: For an extensive discussion of the 'Quaker Farmer' subject, see: Lang, B. J. From East to West: "Quaker Farmer" Chinese Export Porcelain in America , Washington: 2006.
  • Notes: The "Quaker Farmer" pattern is closely associated with Israel Wistar Morris and Mary Hollingsworth Morris of Philadelphia. A drawing of the subject, ascribed to Mary Hollingsworth Morris, survived in the family and is now at Dumbarton House, headquarters of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America; it has long been considered the probable design source for the Chinese export wares. Israel Morris and several of his brothers were involved in the China Trade, and examples of "Quaker Farmer" porcelain have descended through different branches of the Morris family.

The pattern is known in several variations, including en grisaille, sepia, polychrome enamel, and green enamel. Examples also differ according to border treatment and the inclusion or omission of buildings within the landscape. The present tea bowl and saucer are painted in gilt and en grisaille, without a border pattern and without any architectural structure in the scene, making them a particularly restrained example of this celebrated Philadelphia-associated China Trade pattern.
