Chinese Export American Market Miniature Waste Bowl from the service of Richard and Hannah Oakford, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

ca. 1820-1825; depicting a central scene of a distant country house with stream, bridge, and large tree to the left; monogrammed R&HO, for Rebecca and Hannah Oakford, daughters of Richard and Hannah Oakford; decorated with gilt border, with unglazed foot rim; diameter: 3 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Grogan & Company, Boston, Chinese Export: A Boston Collection, 16 August 2023, Lot 211.
  • Literature: Lee, J. G., Philadelphians and the China Trade, 1784-1844, Philadelphia: 1984, p. 142, no. 129 (illus).
  • Notes: This miniature tea bowl is from a child's tea service made for Rebecca and Hannah Oakford, daughters of Richard Oakford and Hannah S. Serrill Oakford of Philadelphia. The monogram R&HO identifies the young recipients, while the landscape scene of a distant country house, stream, bridge, and tree appears to be a stock Chinese export pattern rather than a specific depiction of the Oakford family residence. Jean Gordon Lee notes in Philadelphians and the China Trade: 1784–1844, p. 142, that the service was likely sent from China to the Oakford family through their agent Nathan Dunn, paralleling other miniature services and children's objects ordered through Philadelphia China Trade networks.

Richard Oakford was closely connected to Isaac Cooper Jones and, in 1814, entered the mercantile firm of Isaac Cooper Jones and Thomas Firth & Co., importers of dry goods from China and the East Indies. The firm became Jones, Oakford & Co. in 1819 and participated directly in the Canton trade, including investment in the China Packet, which arrived in Philadelphia from Canton on March 31, 1819. The tea bowl therefore represents both a charming child's object and a highly personal survival from a Philadelphia family deeply connected to the China Trade.
