Chinese Export American Market Cup Pot de Crème from the service of Nathaniel Silsbee, a U.S. Senator, of Salem, Massachusetts

ca. 1810; depicting in sepia and gilt alternating figures and precious-objects motifs; bearing the central monogram ‘S'; height of pot including lid: 3 5/8 in.

  • Provenance: From a private Vero Beach, Florida collection.
  • Notes: Nathaniel Silsbee was born on January 14, 1773, in Salem, Province of Massachusetts Bay, then a part of British America. At the age of fourteen, to support his family upon the financial failures of his father, he went to sea and learned navigation. His able seamanship won him, at the age of nineteen, command of Elias Hasket Derby's Sloop Sally.
