CARVED MARITIME NAUTILUS SHELL, commemorating The Great Eastern Steamship, designed by I. K. Brunel, built by J. S. Russell, finished 31st Jan. 1858

Provenance: Property of a Duxbury, Massachusetts collector.

Other Notes: The Great Eastern Steam Ship was an iron sailing steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built by J. Scott Russell & Co. at Millwall on the River Thames, London. It was largest ship ever built at the time of her 1858 launch, and had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers from England to Australia without refueling.


  • Condition: overall good condition; some hairline cracks to rim of shell; shell is affixed to base by a screw and shell is cracked at screw site; there is also a small round hole near the base of the shell
