AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS
(American, 1848-1907)
RELIEF OF VICTORY
bronze, brown patina
monogrammed ASG, l.r.
diameter: 10 in.
Provenance: Given by Mrs. John Paramino, Wellesley, Massachusetts, to the consignor's mother; by descent in the family.
Other Notes: For a similar example, see Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1978.93.
Though Augusts Saint-Gaudens is perhaps best known for his large scale commemorative bronze sculptures and reliefs, he also designed coins for the US in the early 20th century. Two of his coins, the Gold Indian Head Eagle and the Gold Double Eagle, are widely sought after today. This bronze relief, which depicts the head of Nike, was a design for the one-cent piece; however, the design was never produced as a coin.
This relief originally belonged to the sculptor John Paramino and his wife. Boston-based Paramino created several of the commemorative bronzes in the Boston Common, including the Lafayette Memorial and the Declaration of Independence. His "Founders Memorial," which depicts the meeting of John Winthrop and William Blackstone, the earliest settlers of Boston, is along the Common at Beacon and Spruce Streets, while Saint-Gaudens "Robert Gould Shaw Memorial" is just a block up the street.
