  • Provenance: Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas.
  • Literature: See Feller, Dr. J. Q., Canton Famille Rose Porcelain Part I: Rose Medallion, The Magazine Antiques (October 1983, p. 753). In the article cited above, Dr. Feller notes the existence of several Chinese export porcelain services characterized by a distinctive decorative scheme featuring four "melon" reserves arranged around a central medallion, typically containing the owner's initials or cipher. He suggests that these services are likely datable to the 1860s, although the original owners of many examples remain unidentified. Of particular interest, Dr. Feller also records a group of pieces from a dinner service bearing the cipher JWB in gold, noting that the formation of the J and B closely resembles that seen on the Buchanan service, suggesting the possibility of a common hand in their decoration. At the time of his writing, the identity of JWB remained unresolved. The present example, however, has since been identified through an inscription on the base of the tureen as referring to John Wilkes Booth. This attribution would link the JWB service to one of the most infamous figures in American history. It would further suggest that the Buchanan service (associated with President James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States) and the Booth service may be closely related.
