ca. 1858; decorated in the rose medallion palette with melon and scrolled reserves and with a central roundel featuring the highly stylized monogram JB, for James Buchanan; diameter: 10 1/4 in.

  • Literature: This service is documented and described by Dr. John. Q. Feller in articles he published in The Magazine Antiques, in the 1980s. See Canton Famille Rose Porcelain Part I: Rose Medallion (October 1983, pp. 749-750, pl. II) and Canton Famille Rose Porcelain Part IV: some rare and unusual pieces (October 1986, pp. 726-727).
  • Notes: This plate is from the rare Chinese export Rose Medallion service associated with James Buchanan, fifteenth President of the United States. The service belongs to a distinctive mid-nineteenth-century group decorated with melon-form and scrolled reserves around a central cipher. Although Rose Medallion wares were produced in large numbers for the export market, special-order services with identifiable American presidential associations are exceptionally rare. Published discussion of mid nineteenth century porcelain has long recognized a Buchanan Rose Medallion dinner service with a central monogram datable to the 1850s.

The Buchanan attribution rests on a combination of documentary, stylistic, and provenance evidence. One of the earliest recorded pieces from the service was a covered vegetable dish bearing a fragmentary label referring to a December 20, 1899 sale by James W. Ratcliff, a Washington, D.C. auctioneer, of White House furnishings and porcelain. Additional pieces with the same cipher and decorative scheme later appeared in Baltimore, reportedly descended from the estate of Harriet Lane Johnston, Buchanan's niece and White House hostess, who inherited a portion of Buchanan's personal effects.

It has been suggested that the service may have been presented to Buchanan in 1858 by James J. and Cornelia Van Ness Roosevelt. Or, Buchanan may have acquired or commissioned it himself, either during his diplomatic service as Minister to Great Britain or during his presidency. However it entered his household, the service represents an unusually important presidential survival: a rare mid-nineteenth-century Chinese export Rose Medallion service bearing a personalized cipher associated with one of the most historically consequential American political figures of the antebellum period.
