American Market Covered Sugar Bowl, likely Philadelphia, ca. 1800

decorated in gilt and brown with floral drapery intertwined with flowering vine and geometric design along rims, depicting central image of a pair of birds perched atop a fountain; bearing monogram J.R.S.; height: 5 1/2 in.

  • Notes: It is likely that this sugar bowl was part of a tea service belonging to Joseph Sims of Philadelphia, due to the color palette, border decoration, and monogram.
  • Condition: Lid cracked in half, though all pieces are intact. Crack stems from a chip in the rim of the lid.
