Grogan & Company is honored to offer this selection of works from the collection of Yousuf and Estrellita Karsh, a collection that reflects a life shaped by deep appreciation of art, culture, and friendship.

Born in Armenia in 1908, Karsh arrived in Canada as a teenage refugee with little more than resilience, determination, and a keen eye for beauty, an instinct inherited from his father, a dealer in rare and finely made objects. Karsh's early artistic training began in Ottawa, where he apprenticed with his uncle, photographer George Nakash, and continued in Boston under the guidance of photographer John H. Garo. It was in Boston that Karsh developed his approach to portraiture, often referring to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Public Library as his true places of study.

Boston remained a lasting touchstone for Karsh and his wife of forty years, Estrellita. Decades later, the couple settled near the very institutions that had shaped his early career. Their life together was defined by a shared curiosity, spanning travel, literature, science, and history, as well as the cultural world around them.

While Karsh is celebrated for his iconic portraits of figures such as Winston Churchill and Georgia O'Keeffe, and for his distinctive use of light, the strength of his work lies in what happens before the shutter is released. His portraits reflect an ability to connect and reveal, capturing not only a posed likeness but a fleeting human truth. This sensitivity to people and attentiveness to connection shaped both his work and the life he shared with Estrellita.

This collection reflects that same spirit. More than an assemblage of beautiful objects, it speaks to relationships formed through mutual respect and shared artistic values. Bronze sculptures of Karsh and Estrellita by artists within their circle, including Emilio Greco and Giacomo Manzù, serve as personal expressions of that connection. These are not simply likenesses, but gestures of admiration and intimacy, works shaped by artists who knew their subjects well.

There is a spirit of reciprocity in this collection: Karsh photographed many of the artists who in return created the portraits of Yousuf and Estrellita offered here. For example, in the summer of 1970, Karsh traveled to Italy to photograph artists including Emilio Greco, Jacques Lipchitz, and Giacomo Manzù, and it was out of this trip that Lots 84-86 were born.

Together, the objects in the collection offer a portrait of two individuals whose lives were guided by empathy, intellect, and an enduring appreciation for beauty found in both art and human experience. As Estrellita reflected in an interview with the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, it was a life defined by "hard work, meticulous preparation, and glorious moments."
