After LIPPO MEMMI

Italian, ca. 1291-1356

Madonna and Child

oil on canvas laid on panel
31 1/2 x 21 1/2 in., frame: 41 x 31 in.

  • Provenance: Purchased in Europe, first half 20th century; The Collection of Herman and Margaret Hyde Butler, Rochester, New York; a gift to the Sisters of Mercy of Rochester; The Collection of an Upstate New York Gentleman.
  • Notes: The Tuscan town of Siena was dedicated to the Virgin in 1260 on the eve of the Battle of Montaperti. The resulting fervor in the "City of the Virgin" resulted in an influx of imagery from Sienese artists depicting the Madonna and Child. The present work is after a panel of the same subject by Lippo Memmi (the brother-in-law and collaborator of noted artist Simone Martini), now in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Memmi's sensitive modelling, refinement, and the almost-translucent quality of his colors are typical of Sienese painting of this period.
  • Condition: "As-is" condition. Several repaired cracks to panel; flaking paint throughout, most visibly in gold areas; scattered old restoration throughout.

Please note: All property is sold "AS IS" and any statement, whether oral or written, is given as a courtesy and shall not be deemed as a guarantee, warranty, or representation of the authenticity of authorship, physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, provenance, exhibitions, literature or historical relevance of the property or otherwise. The absence of a condition report does not imply the item is in perfect condition.
