A Rare Chinese Export Canadian Market Armorial 'Trading Company' Plate

ca. 1795; bearing the arms of a Canadian trading company, which features both an indigenous person and the figure of ‘Commerce' holding a ship's mast; inscribed below on a scrolling banner Commercio liberali crescimus; decorated with a cobalt blue lattice and spearhead underglazed border; diameter: 9 3/4 in.

  • Provenance: Artois Encheres, Arras, France.
  • Literature: Howard, D. S. Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. 1, London: 1974, p. 715; Litzenburg Jr., T. V., Chinese Export Porcelain in the Reeves Center Collection at Washington and Lee University, New York: 2006, p. 135; Mudge, J. M. Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, New York: 1986, p.195.
  • Notes: Although the origin of these arms remains uncertain, it has been suggested that they may have been designed for the North West Company, which was formed in 1784 and later merged with the Hudson Bay Company. Mudge, in Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, adds the following color: "Canada, still part of the British Empire and not independent until 1867, had a dramatically different history of importing Chinese porcelains than did the United States. Earthenwares far outnumbered porcelains, which were reserved largely for those who could afford luxury ceramics, such as Simon McTavish, chief fur dealer and one of the richest men in Montreal. Also, the East India wares, which were as plentiful in Canada as in the United States in the late eighteenth century, tapered off in the nineteenth, according to period advertisements. They were replaced by Staffordshire China, especially porcelains of Copeland and Minton."
