A CHINESE SILK EMBROIDERED PANEL, for European (probably Portuguese or Spanish) Export market, 17th/18th century
7 ft. 5 in. x 6 ft.

Other Notes: Likely for the Portuguese or Spanish market. After the Portuguese established a sea route to China in 1498, the Chinese silk industry began producing pieces for the Spanish and Portuguese markets. Initially, Western motifs were added to Chinese compositions, but, by the 17th century, pieces were created specifically for Western markets. These Chinese silk pieces were well received throughout Europe, as they complemented Europeans' taste for Chinoiserie furnishings at this time. This panel features the saffron yellow that was often made for the Portuguese market in the late 17th/early 18th century as well as the double-headed eagle motif that is likely based on the Habsburg coat-of-arms (the Habsburgs ruled Austria and Spain from 1566-1700).
