Southwest Persian Carpet, early 20th century, with cotton foundation; 6 ft. 3 in. x 4 ft. 6 in.

Other Notes: Design wise, one would label this a Qashgai rug, but for the fact that it has a cotton foundation and asymmetrical knots open to the right. Qashgai rugs usually would have a wool foundation with knots open to the left.

James Opie discusses these carpets in his 1981 book, Tribal Rugs of Southern Persia. In the final section of the book, ( Uncertain Origin, p. 211) he shows a similar piece and he ascribes it to the area of Southeastern Shiraz, near the town of Neyriz, bordering both Khamseh and Afshar territories. Wherever these rugs are woven, with their lively design, they take the cake for number of animals depicted. This example and the one in Opies book have a profusion of wildlife that defies counting. These rugs also both have a fantastic seven legged creature in the main border.
