  • Notes: Polish-born artist and theoretician Richard Filipowski (1923-2008) was a fixture in American modernism. As a student at the Institute of Design in Chicago he became a protégé of László Moholy-Nagy, a founding member at the New Bauhaus. Moholy-Nagy invited Filipowski to join the faculty alongside Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer from 1946-1950. With Gropius he later planned and taught the design fundamental course at Harvard, and he later moved on to the department of Architecture at MIT where he taught for 36 years. In contrast to his teaching career, Filipowski's artistic career was intensely private, and as a result the majority of his paintings, sculptures, furniture, and jewelry remain in private collections. He referred to his artistic process as the "art of psyche", a technique for self expression and exploration. His work from the 1940s and 50s, as represented by his graphic and abstract pieces in The Holiday Auction, showcase the pillars of the Bauhaus philosophy through the use of bold primary colors, geometric iterations, and frenetic linework.
