  • Notes: Decorated with the refined and restrained aesthetic so typical of the Federal period of our new republic.
The Canton is noted as one of the earliest American vessels, following the Empress of China, to open direct trade routes between the new United States and Canton, China. Although New York initiated the China Trade, it was Philadelphia which for several years had the greatest tonnage anchored in the reaches of Whampoa. The Canton's 1785–1786 enterprise was part of a major post-Revolutionary War effort to build commercial ties to Asia, bringing back high-profit cargo, including porcelain and textiles, to Philadelphia. Aboard this vessel was an order for a monogrammed dinner service, as well as a monogrammed tea service, made for Thomas Mifflin, which included the present pieces.
