  • Notes: Admiral Sir Edward Hughes (1716–1794) was a Royal Navy officer who entered the service in 1735 and rose through the ranks to become Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies in 1773, a post he held during the Anglo-French naval conflicts of the American Revolutionary War. He was known for his steady adherence to the Royal Navy's Fighting Instructions and for his long and often indecisive campaign against the French Admiral Pierre André de Suffren in West Indian waters. Contemporary and later accounts occasionally refer to Hughes as "Old Hot and Hot," a nickname said to reflect both his reputed fondness for hot food and a robust physique. In 1784 he returned to Britain after his service in the West Indies, where he was received at court and met with senior government figures, including the King. He had accumulated substantial prize money during his career and lived in retirement without further active command.
