Provenance: A gift from the artist to a New York Lady; by descent in her family to her great-nieces, Boston, Massachusetts.

- This early Milton Avery painting was gifted by the artist to Marion Dunham, a New York City lady, in the late 1920s/early 1930s. Dunham was known for her cultural soirees, which were enjoyed by Avery and other influential artists and thinkers of the day. In her later years, Dunham moved from New York to New England, and the painting has descended through her family for several generations. The work relates in both subject matter and palette to Avery's 1929 "Winter Riders," an 18 x 30 in. oil at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.
