This 1946 watercolor by German-American artist Lyonel Feininger is a striking example of Feininger's lifelong interest in both the form and movement of trains. In 1951, Lyonel and Julia Feininger lent the painting to The Cleveland Museum of Art for an exhibition titled "The Work of Lyonel Feininger." Upon viewing the exhibition, Cleveland's Mr. and Mrs. J.P. McWilliams were so taken by Feininger's work that they purchased this painting directly from the artist's family at the close of the show. It has descended through the McWilliams family to this day.
  • Condition: Hinge mounted at top corners; edges reinforced with old, brittle tape; a few tack marks at extreme margins. Colors are strong and the work is in overall good condition.
