Lois Jones, Paris, l.l.
8 x 10 in., frame: 10 x 12 in.
Other Notes: Born in Boston in 1905, Lois Mailou Jones demonstrated artistic talent from an early age. She held her first solo exhibition on Martha's Vineyard at the age of 17 and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, winning the Susan Minot Lane Scholarship in Design. As she matured as an artist, she shifted her focus from textile design to painting, ultimately receiving a fellowship to the Académie Julian in Paris in 1937. As an African-American woman, Jones felt much more welcome in the Paris artists community than she had in the United States, and she remained living as an expat in Paris for much of the 1930s and 40s. Throughout her years in Paris, she experimented with painting en plein air, of which this lot is likely an example.
- Condition: Condition: Scattered minor inpainting; vertical grain of panel visible throughout, particularly in sky and light colored areas.
