The work was painted in 1945, by which time Marin had developed his mature style and was at the peak of his artistic career. His confident brushstrokes, nuanced color-work, and astute use of negative space come together to create a powerful, movement-filled scene, one that aptly demonstrates why Marin is considered one of the foremost American Modernist painters.
