Highly Important Unrecorded Chinese Export American Market Tea Caddy from the service of Gouverneur Morris of New York, abolitionist Founding Father and 'Penman of the Constitution'

ca. 1790-1793; bearing a central oval roundel featuring the gilt monogram GM; decorated with gilt and green geometric border with famille rose floral sprays; height: 4 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: From a private Madison, Wisconsin collection.
  • Notes: The dating of the present piece is based on the border type, which corresponds with that made for Joshua Fisher, as discussed in Lee, J. G., Philadelphians and the China Trade, 1784-1844, Philadelphia: 1984.

Other Notes: Gouverneur Morris (1752–1816) was an American statesman and Founding Father of the United States, and a signer of the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He is widely credited with drafting the Preamble to the United States Constitution and has often been called the "Penman of the Constitution." At a time when most Americans still identified primarily with their individual states, Morris was a leading advocate for a stronger national identity and the concept of citizenship in a unified federal republic. He was also among the most outspoken opponents of slavery at the Constitutional Convention.
  • Condition: missing lid
